GCSS DEEP WG News - 6 Sep 06
GCSS DWG/SPARC/IGAC meeting
Many thanks to all those who took part in the meeting we had in Victoria in May. It was a well received meeting from all the different groups who took part. The majority of the talks presented at this meeting, including the most recent update on the activities of the DWG, can be found at: http://www.atmosp.physics.utoronto.ca/SPARC/TTL/Participants_Abstracts.html
A formal meeting report will also follow in the next month or so.
I am sorry we had only and hour or so to discuss DWG issues. I will ensure we have a longer session at our next WG meeting.
GCSS Panel Meeting
The GCSS Panel will be meeting will be on 12 October. This is part of a larger GEWEX panel meeting - the agenda is here: http://www.gewex.org/pan-gewex_meeting.htm
If you have any issues related to GCSS activities you would like raising at this meeting then please feel free to contact me (or if you prefer, Christian Jacob) before 9th October.
Case 5 intercomparison
- The current intercomparison is progressing well. The best summary of the status of this case can be found in the talk presented in Victoria (see above link). Preparation of two papers describing the CRM/SCM comparisons and NWP comparisons are beginning to be prepared. We hope to have a draft of these by the end of the year depending on the authors other commitments. Steve Woolnough is leading the CRM/SCM intercomparison work and Martin Willett is leading the NWP intercomparison work. I also hope to submit a paper before the end of the year describing the work done designing this case study.
- Further to the information shown in the talk, there is now some Limited Area Modelling runs being set up by NCAR. While there is no formal coordination of this LAM work at this stage, do let me know if you would have any interest in doing these and comparing with what we have. I can do some informal level of coordination of this work.
Further intercomparison work and the next meeting
Some time after the Panel meeting (i.e. November time), I will aim to canvass views from you on both suggestions for further intercomparison work and when and where to have the next DWG meeting. If you have any strong views this should be done on a shorter time scale than this then please contact me with this.
ARM white paper
ARM has requested GCSS input into their current plan for major upgrades of their cloud radar capability at the SGP site. There is a proposal paper available. Rather than send this out to all, if you would like to comment on this then please let me know and I can send this word document out to you. I will then raise any comment you give me when when it is discussed in the Panel meeting in October.
